Topographies

Topographies
Acrylic, collage, walnut oil, and ink on canvas. 24 x 18″. 2018.

I’m always on the lookout for interesting source material to work into my mixed media canvases, and frequently attempt to incorporate the meaning behind the material into the work (for another example of this, see Pattern language). In this case, I used coils of small strips of topographic maps to generate a pseudo-topography, the tactile lines on the canvas conveying imaginary hills and valleys. I then rubbed a thin amount of acrylic over the surface and layered a “trail map” of additional map scraps over that. The “bas relief”-ness of this one is admittedly tricky to capture onscreen — try clicking on the above image to get a closer look.
