Surfacing
Acrylic monotype collage mounted in wood panel, sealed with epoxy resin. 15 x 15″. 2019.

I created this piece in a fashion very similar to Ascent – using a monotype process to paint paper and then collaging pieces together – but then went a step further, mounting the finished collage inside a wooden frame (actually a repurposed wooden cabinet door from Ikea) and covering the image in an epoxy resin, which lends the final piece a depth that belies its paper foundation and helps our little sea turtle friend feel a bit more at home under water. The resin itself was surprisingly easy to work with, and I successfully managed to not permanently adhere myself to anything or pass out from the fumes!

I wound up creating four images in this fashion. In addition to the turtle, there is a dragonfly (from the same stencil as Ascent) in another 15 x 15″ cabinet, as well as a purple iris and a flock of seagulls (the bird, not the band), each in a smaller 9 x 15″ cabinet.
