Successful weeds

Successful weeds
Acrylic, collage, and colored pencil on canvas. 10 x 10″. 2018.

This was one of my favorite pieces to create. The collaged elements come from a book about the plant kingdom, and the piece’s title, Successful Weeds, is borrowed from one of the text excerpts featured in the painting. I was drawn to that phrase because when it comes to the elements of our natural environment that we deem unwanted (such as weeds), we rarely consider the impressive powers of natural adaptation that they possess. We can try to eradicate them all we want, but they are worthy adversaries!

I merged a variety of styles in this piece, calling on abstract aspects, a more realistic approach for the dandelion tufts, and a nod to the more technical illustration style typically associated with botanical drawings.
