Dark Patterns

Acrylic and cut-paper collage on canvas. The original painting has sold! But you can purchase a reproduction below. (Note that cards of this piece feature a slightly cropped version of the original image due to size constraints.)

This started out as a purely abstract piece that I declared “done” a couple years ago, but upon revisiting it, I decided it (and its sister canvas, Pattern Language) still needed that elusive something. The geometry of the moths seemed to work well within the context of the collaged sewing patterns since, just like often happens in sewing, their creation involved cutting along the fold to create a single, symmetrical form. The name of this piece involves wordplay referencing the patterns featured prominently in the collage work, as well as a UX term for interfaces that purposefully try to lure or trick users into acting against their best interests.
