This is what happens when your third-grader brings home the board he broke in Taekwondo when you’re in the midst of learning woodblock carving: you see the board scraps and think, “I could carve that!” Rather than plan anything out in advance, I opted to just let the natural wood grain and the broken shape inform the image. I used a reductive process, carving away bits and pieces as I went as I layered the color to create the final sunset scene. The cheap pine was definitely not the same quality of wood I was accustomed to carving, and my poor tools definitely paid the price, but it was a fun exercise in “creative reuse” nevertheless!
