Spotted Towhee

Spotted towhees are some of the most common birds in my yard, always busily doing whatever it is that keeps towhees busy, rustling around in the underbrush. This particular towhee is made from collaged materials and acrylic paint on the inner panel of a reclaimed maple cabinet door. I built up layers of gift wrap tissue directly on the wood to create the organic texture, layered that with acrylic paint to create the sense of abstracted underbrush, and then glued down cut pieces of paper to form the towhee itself, including a little snippet about towhees from a nature guide. A final layer of acrylic paint provides the spotted towhee’s telltale coloring and other details.
