This piece served as a springboard for me to research various crop-timing systems relied upon throughout history, which are essentially the beginnings of the invention of the calendar. Through multiple layers of collage, acrylic, and digital drawings, it weaves together concepts and artifacts such as Coptic rhymes about seasonal tasks, Chinese and Western astrology, and Old Farmer’s Almanacs. The circular array of different representations of seasons proved a challenge to create in my vector-editing software of choice, Inkscape, and taught me a lot about radial symmetry, while the wheat in the foreground was a fun exercise in collaging representations of patterns in nature.
