Several months before producing this piece, I began toying with the idea of reassembling some of my abstract monotypes (particularly those that weren’t hanging together on their own as a single composition) into new hybrid pieces. The process is admittedly cathartic — taking my less successful output and tearing it into little pieces isn’t a bad way of facing one’s failures head-on! Using this approach, I’ve created a couple collaged canvases, as well as created a few more utilitarian objects, like bookmarks, coasters, and magnets.
I got caught up in the re-assembling/collaging aspects so much, that I began creating new monotypes with this end goal in mind. I came up with a general idea for my palette, created full-page monochromatic prints of the colors I needed (adding in textures and color variances for a bit more nuance), and then got to cutting out the dragonfly image.
