Ascent

Ascent
Acrylic monotype collage. 8 x 8″. 2019.

Several months before producing Ascent, I began toying with the idea of reassembling some of my abstract monotypes (particularly those that weren’t hanging together on their own as a single composition) into new hybrid pieces. The process is admittedly cathartic — taking my less successful output and tearing it into little pieces isn’t a bad way of facing one’s failures head-on! Using this approach, I’ve created a couple collaged canvasses, as well as created a few more utilitarian objects, like bookmarks, coasters, and magnets.

I got caught up in the re-assembling/collaging aspects so much, that I began creating new monotypes with this end goal in mind. I came up with a general idea for my palette, created “flats” for each color needed (well, sort of — I messed around a bit with the colors and textures to add in a bit more nuance), and then got to cutting out the dragonfly image.
